Boxing club pays tribute to legendary Consalves couple

Randgate Boxing Club paid tribute to beloved former coaches, Bettie and George Consalves, with a memorial tournament celebrating their decades of dedication to the youth and the community.

The Randgate Boxing Club recently hosted a memorial tournament to honour its former managers and coaches, Bettie and George Consalves, who dedicated more than three decades to the club and the community.

Bettie (72) passed away on November 13, 2006, and George (77) followed less than a year later on April 26, 2007. Both died of heart attacks. Just three years before their deaths, their son Willie Consalves had taken over the running of the club.

“When my parents managed the club, they helped many underprivileged children stay away from criminal actions. Through the club, they showed these children love, respect, confidence and also discipline,” Willie explained.

“This tournament truly honoured my parents for the work they did, not only for the children but also for the community. They should never be forgotten because they were salt of the earth. I could only describe them as loyal, honest people that always helped where they could,” Willie said.
