Mogale Vikings claim victory over House Party at festive tourney
House Party FC were defeated 2–0 by Mogale Vikings at the GREST, leaving fans disappointed on home turf.
Once again, a local club suffered defeat on home turf during the annual Greater Randfontein Summer Tournament (GREST), held over the festive season at the iconic Mohlakeng Old Ground.
Mogale Vikings spoiled the celebrations for the local boys, House Party Football Club, with a 2–0 victory. The goals came 19 minutes into the first half and again 15 minutes before the final whistle, both scored by Katlego Mashishi.
Even the presence of Tumelo “Doof” Mogapi, former top-flight player for Bloemfontein Celtics and Maritzburg United, could not prevent the neighbours from taking the bragging rights in this West Rand encounter.
“We did not take our chances when it mattered most, and in football, stupid mistakes mean punishment,” said Mogapi.
He added, “It’s disappointing for local boys not to live up to the moment on home soil, especially at this iconic old gravel ground, which has hosted top teams like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Back in the day, we even played against clubs like Highlands Park, Lusitano, and Arcadia Shepherds. Former Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund also trotted this same field.”
Former Young Zebras player Mandla Sithole noted that many top players, including the late Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe, Donald Ace Khuse, and Joseph Banks Setlhodi, were discovered at this historic soccer field.
