Beloved pothole fixer Oom Piet recovers after surgery

Community rallies behind beloved Oom Piet as he recovers in hospital after surgery.

Support from the community is pouring in as Piet Lottering, better known as Oom Piet, recovers in hospital after an operation.

His daughter, Mary-Jane Schwartz, confirmed he has been receiving treatment in a Johannesburg hospital since August 29.

She said Oom Piet sought medical help after his leg started going numb. He underwent surgery on August 31 and now goes into the theatre every second day to have the wound on his leg cleaned.

Although doctors have not yet indicated when he will be discharged, Mary-Jane hopes his recovery will be swift.

In the meantime, the community continues to rally behind him.

Resident Charlene Kriel urged locals to keep encouraging him during this time.

“We wish him a speedy recovery. We want him to know that we miss seeing him around and fixing our ever-growing potholes. As a community, we thank you, Oom Piet,” she said.
