Police rescue kidnap victim in East Lynne

The victim and the injured suspect were taken to hospital.

Police under the Tshwane Flying Squad unit were involved in a car chase and shootout in East Lynne this past weekend resulting in the rescue of a kidnap victim.

According to Flying Squad spokesperson, Sergeant Alfred Legodi, police spotted a suspicious silver Toyota Tazz while on patrol in East Lynne around 00:30 on March 15.

The members activated their lights and sirens to stop the vehicle on the corner of Moloto Road and Sefako Makgatho Drive.

“The suspect stopped and as police approached, sped off resulting in a chase,” said Legodi.

“Close to Lavender Road the suspects drove into oncoming traffic and lost control of the vehicle. They crashed into a tree, and jumped out.”

One of the suspects fired two shots at police and they returned fire. One suspect was shot in the right leg and then arrested

The other two suspects ran away but were apprehended about 800m away.

“When police searched the vehicle, they found an unknown man tied up in the boot. The victim was bleeding, police interviewed the suspect and victim and found out that the man had been kidnapped,” Legodi said.

He and the wounded suspect were taken to Steve Biko Hospital.

The suspects were charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm (a Glock 9mm with the serial number filed off).

The vehicle was taken to the Pretoria West Impound. The suspects are expected to appear in court in due course.
