Tshwane police operation results in multiple arrests across the city

Police conducted compliance inspections and raids on illicit liquor outlets, and visibility operations in the Hammanskraal, Mamelodi East, Silverton, and Pretoria Central areas.

Four Tshwane police stations tackled crime in the capital this week, with a total of 4467 persons and 2382 vehicles inspected by police, and 200 vehicles examined to ensure they were not stolen.

During Operation Shanela, conducted in the Pretoria Central, Hammanskraal, Mamelodi East, and Silverton policing areas, Tshwane detective teams successfully apprehended 275 suspects.

These operations included high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illicit liquor outlets.

Tshwane regional SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, said that included in these were 84 individuals involved in gender-based violence, six for murder, four for attempted murder, five involved in armed robbery, and two arrested for rape.

“Four uniformed groups, comprising one tactical team and three roadblock groups were deployed to police the areas,” said Van Dyk.

Fifteen liquor premises were inspected, resulting in eight establishments being found non-compliant with liquor regulations.

“A total of 121 490 ml of liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of criminal cases.
“Additionally, two businesses were fined for non-compliance with the Secondhand Goods Act,” said van Dyk.

Police also detained 42 undocumented immigrants pending deportation following the completion of legal processes.

One person was arrested for public drinking.

Seven persons were arrested for possession of drugs, with 10 ziplock bags containing various narcotics found in their possession.

Additionally, two individuals were apprehended for possession of 100 000 illicit cigarettes, and 250 litres of diesel were discovered abandoned and handed over for safekeeping.

Three firearms were recovered, and one individual was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm after failing to provide a reasonable explanation for its possession.

Van Dyk said that the three firearms will undergo ballistic tests to determine potential links to other criminal activities.

One person was arrested for possession of stolen property after being found in possession of a white Honda reported stolen in Brooklyn in 2023.

“Under the leadership of Brigadier Samuel Thine, Team Tshwane maintained a steadfast commitment to combating crime within the Tshwane region through the deployment of multidisciplinary crime-fighting reaction teams,” said Van Dyk.
