Pretoria DJ gunned down in a hail of bullets

DJ ‘The Noise Maker’ Mashata was gunned down in the early hours of Sunday and died at Akasia Hospital.

Tshwane police are investigating the killing of Pretoria MC and DJ Peter Mashata, known as ‘The Noise Maker’, and a friend.

Mashata was shot dead in Soshanguve Block GG, north of Pretoria in the early hours of Sunday, April 21 while returning from a gig at Epozini Lifestyle in Soshanguve.

It is alleged that two men were driving near the Tshwane University of Technology’s Soshanguve campus at around 01:00 when a man opened fire at the victims, aged in their 40s.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Khweza said the shooting incident involved two men aged 46 and 45.

Khweza said, “Murder and attempted murder dockets have been opened for police investigations. One victim died in hospital while the other was injured.”

Khweza said the victims were driving in Soshanguve when shots were fired at their vehicle.

“The suspects fled the scene and police are following several leads,” added Khweza.

Tshwane spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot said “The suspect fled the scene. The one victim, by the name of Peter Mashata, was transported to a medical facility, however died at Akasia Hospital.”

“The other victim was shot and injured. “

The motive for the shooting was unknown to the police at this stage.

“A case for Murder and Attempted murder will be investigated by the Akasia police detectives.”

Close relative Gugulethu Ngobeni confirmed the passing of Mashata, saying “It is with great sadness and sorrow that we inform you of the ultimate passing of our beloved son, uncle, brother, and colleague.”

Ngobeni said a family representative will keep residents posted on details of both the memorial and funeral services during the week.

Ngobeni added, “The family is appreciative of all messages of support and condolences that have started to flow in and humbly request that they be given the space and time to deal with the trauma.”
