After a well-deserved three-week break, learners in South Africa will be ready to return to their desks on Tuesday, 9 July, marking the end of the enjoyable holiday period.

The third term will run until 20 September and comprise 53 school days – making it the most extended term of the year.

In a change from previous years, all public schools – both inland and at the coast – will follow the same term calendar in 2024.

There is no longer a difference between inland and coastal schools breaking up and returning to school as was previously the case.

It’s important to note that inland provinces, including the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, and coastal provinces, such as the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape, no longer have a difference in their school term schedules.

The Department of Basic Education’s 2024 school calendar reveals an important update. This year, learners will be embarking on a 203-day academic journey across four terms, which is four more days than the previous year, providing more opportunities for learning and growth.

Here are the dates for the terms:

• Term 1: 17 January to 20 March (46 days)
• Term 2: 3 April to 14 June (52 days)
• Term 3: 9 July to 20 September (53 days)
• Term 4: 1 October to 11 December (52 days)
