East police operation nets over 300 suspects

Police continued their zero tolerance on crime in Tshwane with multidisciplinary crime-combatting reaction teams.

More than 300 suspects were arrested for various crimes during a police operation in Silverton and Boschkop on November 14.

The operation focused on high-crime areas and included patrols, compliance inspections and crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales.

Police led the operation with the help of other stakeholders, including the departments of home affairs and labour, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police, CPF, crime prevention wardens and elected councillors.

According to police spokesperson Johan Van Dyk, 307 individuals were arrested for serious offences, including 100 for gender-based violence, 44 for assault, one for attempted murder, two for armed robbery and four for rape.

He said eight undocumented individuals were detained and await legal proceedings.

“Should these individuals be found in violation of immigration laws, deportation procedures will be initiated,” stated Van Dyk.

“Four individuals were fined for employing undocumented immigrants.”

In addition to the arrests, police personnel inspected 985 individuals and checked 540 vehicles, resulting in one vehicle being confiscated and impounded for further investigation.

The operation also targeted illegal activities, with 32 premises, six second-hand goods shops, and five liquor premises searched and inspected.

“[A total of] 109 Aarto infringement notices were issued, totalling R50 000 and one taxi was impounded for non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act,” said Van Dyk.

Van Dyk stated that the operation also targeted illegal activities, with 32 premises, six second-hand goods shops, and five liquor premises searched and inspected.

He said this led to the closure of three illegal alcohol premises and the confiscation of alcohol, which will be destroyed once legal proceedings are finalised.

“One person was also arrested for illegal gambling.”
