WATCH: Centurion substation goes up in flames

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage as investigations have to take place after cooling.

Large parts of Centurion are without electricity after a mini substation in Zwartkop was ravaged by a fire this morning.

Additionally, a 132kV trip has caused power outages in the east of Pretoria, affecting Moreleta Park, Waterkloof Ridge, and Erasmuskloof.

Ward 66 councillor Ina Strijdom said the fire at the substation caused the outage in large parts of Centurion.

“The areas affected in Centurion include Kloofsig, Valhalla, Doornkloof, Thaba Tshwane and others.”

Strijdom said the emergency service finished its duties to extinguish the fire and then once cooling is done, the electricity teams will be able to access the area and assess the damages.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage as investigations will have to take place after the cooling is done, and that is when we will have an idea of the extent of the damage, what needs to be replaced and repaired, as well as restoration time,” she explained.

Strijdom said the details are currently sketchy as the electricity team is not yet done investigating the issues.

She said some roads are closed in the vicinity of the substation as cables have fallen onto the roads.

“The Old Joburg and Wierda Road Crossing are some of the roads closed.

“We will update residents as soon as more detailed information is available.”

Tshwane announced on its official X account that it is aware of widespread power outages affecting several areas in Centurion, including Lyttelton, Kloofsig, Valhalla, and Doornkloof.

“The outages are reportedly due to vandalism, cable theft, and a fire at a mini substation in Valhalla. As a result of the incident, multiple roads have been closed for safety reasons due to power cables that have fallen onto the roadways.”

It further confirmed that the power outages in the east of Pretoria are due to a 132kV trip, which is currently being attended to by the relevant teams.

“Technicians are on-site working to restore power to the affected areas,” said Tshwane on X.

The affected roads include:

-The circle above Wierdabrug SAPS
-Entrance at Glen Lauriston
-Viking Road and Old Johannesburg Road
-Michael Road to Old Johannesburg Road
-Old Johannesburg and Wierda road crossing

Tshwane urged motorists to avoid the area as the entire block is affected by the fallen power infrastructure.
