Tshwane cops prioritise security on the R55 and surrounds

Various residents have expressed concern over crime around the R55 near Centurion.

Tshwane police have intensified their visibility and patrols on the R55 and surrounding areas.

This comes after community members and road users complained about the rise in robberies in the area, as well as criminals posing as metro police.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said police were aware of the rise in criminal activity in the Raslouw area and its surroundings.

“We have been informed of the rise in spiking and patrols are being conducted. But we need the victims to come forward to open cases for investigation purposes, even with the persons posing as metro officers.”

Van Dyk said for police to make arrests and be effective, victims needed to report these incidents.

“If it is not reported, SAPS does not always know of incidents and cannot prioritise patrols or act.”

Raslouw resident Jasmine Moodley said there have been multiple robberies and spiking incidents on the R55 lately.

Moodley said community members have reported these to the local police, even though no victims actually opened cases.

“We have women driving through that route late in the evening, whose lives were not safe. One will never be sure if traffic officers who are there are real or fake,” she said.

Another resident echoing Moodley’s sentiments was Sundram Khan who told Rekord it was difficult to trust the men and women in blue, especially when driving down that route.

“The whole thing puts us in a peculiar situation, as we would not know when to stop and when not to. We urge police to act swiftly and deal with the situation as soon as possible,” she said.

Van Dyk urged residents to be extremely vigilant, adding that if they became aware of suspicious activities, they should stop at the nearest garage for safety purposes.
