Schoolgirl rugby talent selected for Limpopo

What began as a suggestion from a teacher has quickly developed into a promising sporting journey for a determined young athlete.

POLOKWANE – The 17-year-old Kea Ramaifo is proving that determination and hard work can turn dreams into reality.

A late start, but a fast rise

The Tom Naudé Technical High School learner only started playing rugby in 2025 after being encouraged by teacher Collin Langa to consider taking up the sport.

“Sir Collin was pushing me to join my local rugby club back in 2024, but I did not take him seriously until I joined the Northern Academy Rugby team in 2025,” she said.

Despite initially doubting her abilities, Kea earned a place in the Limpopo rugby team.

“I am playing as a scrum-half, and I enjoy the fact that I connect the forwards with the backs,” she said.

From backyard practice to provincial selection

Ahead of the trials, Kea worked hard to improve her skills, often practising in her backyard using a brick as a rugby ball.

One of the biggest challenges she has faced is overcoming self-doubt, but she remains focused on her goals.

“To balance rugby and school, I follow a timetable that helps me manage both my studies and training.

“My goal is to play rugby at national level, and I will remain focused on achieving that dream.”

Her family and friends were proud when she shared news of her selection, and she hopes her success will inspire more girls to take up the sport.

Breaking barriers and aiming higher

While aware of the stigma often associated with women’s rugby, Kea remains confident and determined to succeed. With her resilience, dedication and passion for the game, she is a young player to watch as she continues to build her rugby career.
