4×4 Winter Lockdown draws over 60 vehicles to Thohoyandou

Off-road enthusiasts from across the country gathered in Thohoyandou for the Vhembe 4x4 Winter Lockdown, with over 60 vehicles in action.

LIMPOPO – The Vhembe 4×4 Camp and Reconciliation Experience presented the Vhembe 4×4 Winter Lockdown ‘Excursion’ from August 7 to 9, bringing together off-road enthusiasts from across the country for a weekend of adventure, competition and community.

On August 7, the event kicked off with the Vhembe 4×4 Camp at Makwatambani Outdoor Lifestyle in Thohoyandou. The following day, participants tackled the 4×4 time speed circuit and obstacle terrain at the same venue. On August 9, the adventure continued with an excursion to the Thathe Sacred Forest.

Over 60 vehicles in action

According to one of the organisers, well over 60 vehicles of various makes and brands were seen in action over the weekend.

The highlight of the event was the number of 4x4s, the enthusiastic audience, the passion shown by drivers on the obstacle terrain and the excitement from 4×4 enthusiasts who travelled from as far as KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The obstacle terrain at Makwatambani Outdoor Lifestyle put both vehicle capabilities and drivers’ skills to the test.

A first for August

The organisers said Vhembe 4×4 hosts this kind of event on an annual basis – one every December for the past nine years. The Vhembe 4×4 Winter Lockdown ‘Excursion’ was the first of its kind in August, organised specifically to encourage women to participate.

The main objective of the event is to promote unity in diversity, sports tourism and brotherhood within previously disadvantaged communities, with a strong focus on community development programmes and charity drives.

The event promotes female participation.
