Flora Park dam is still dangerous

Despite warnings from the police for residents to stay away from the Flora Park dam at night and over weekends, public drinking and harassment are still rife in this area.

POLOKWANE – Despite warnings from the police for residents to stay away from the Flora Park dam at night and over weekends, public drinking and harassment are still rife in this area.

Pieter Castelyn, a resident, told Review that public drinking, including under aged drinking, did not stop even though police were patrolling the area regularly.

“Youngsters from schools in the area spend their afternoons drinking and hanging around the dam. The loud music coming from vehicles and drunken, noisy people make this a problem spot for the neighbourhood.

“Some home owners, who have been living in this neighbourhood for decades, are now contemplating selling their property,” he said.

According to Polokwane police spokesperson, Ntobeng Phala, the police doubled their patrols in the area in an effort to heighten police visibility in an attempt to deter any criminal activities.

“Situations are often made difficult by people in a drunken state who argue with police and this presents a challenge, but we are determined to keep on policing the area and enforcing the law and protecting the residents of Flora Park.

“Arrests will follow and the residents making themselves guilty of drinking in public will be dealt with accordingly. Public drinking is against the law,” said Phala.
