High court building is on schedule

POLOKWANE – Construction on the Polokwane high court building is on course for finalisation in January 2015.
This is according to Phasha Makgolane, spokesperson for the Independent Development Trust (IDT). Makgolane’s assurance comes despite the fact that the project did experience some problems, including the death of a worker who was killed in an accident on site three months ago.
At the time workers alleged that a subcontractor did not provide safety equipment and workers who complained were dismissed.
Makgolane said the IDT enforces all health and safety procedures and regulations in all the projects they are implementing. “The accident happened and the matter is under investigation by the department of labour,” he said.
He said the high court building should have been completed in 2012, but the contractor left the construction site in October that year after two extensions, leaving the building unfi-nished.
SiyaZama GVK was appointed to take over the construction work.
The court building comprises of two individual structures situated on a super basement that can accommodate parking for 253 vehicles.
In addition to the parking space, there are also state-of-the-art holding cells with direct access to the court rooms.
Block A consists of multiple regional high court rooms as well as 17 judges’ chambers and block B comprises seven floors accommodating A-grade office space. The total floor area is 28 000m².
