SANDF mum on vehicles

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is tight lipped about the 71 military vehicles that went missing at the Polokwane base at the end of January this year.

POLOKWANE – The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is tight lipped about the 71 military vehicles that went missing at the Polokwane base at the end of January this year.

According to an article posted on the SANDF’s website, among the missing vehicles is a Mamba mine protected vehicle and a field kitchen.

The following vehicles are also missing:

• Three water tankers, each with a 900 litre plus capacity.

• An unknown number of trucks.

• A trailer fitted with transportable showers.

• An unknown number of motorcycles.

• An unknown number of fuel tankers.

• An unknown number of Samil trucks.

The article blamed poor administration for the unaccountability of equipment and said it was a bigger problem at certain units than others.

More than a month ago, Brig Xolani Mabanga said the matter was being investigated. “Diverging or rather releasing any kind of information in connection with this might jeopardise the ongoing investigation. Once the investigation is finalised, a decision could be made on releasing the findings,” Mabanga said.

By time of going to print, Mabanga could not offer any comment on how the department’s investigation was progressing.
