First aid skills to help them and their peers

THE children at the Reholehile Drop-in Centre in Lenyenye recently learned more about basic first aid.
The care team from Avuxeni Computer Academy in Tzaneen took some time out to teach the youngsters what to do in an emergency. The purpose of the training was to equip the children with skills to help themselves and their peers.
According to the care team, the decision to train children from the centre came after a five-year-old girl, close to Avuxeni, died after choking. The care team said lack of basic first aid skills among children prompted them to step in and change the lives of the children that stay in the areas that they operated in.
“We are in the business of education and education is nothing more than information. As we all know, information is power. So to give these children access to power is the best tool they can use to fight poverty of the body, soul and mind,” explained Renet van Brakel, the CEO of Avuxeni Computer Academy.
The drop-in centre caters for 167 children from disadvantaged families.
For a child to be on the register of Reholegile Drop-in Centre, the family must be impoverished with a household income of less than R1 500 per month.
The event was made possible by generous donations from Sunbake Tzaneen, Summerland, Sugarloaf, Nomi Dada, ER 24, FMS Academy, Miami Canners, JD Botha and Venbeck.
