Drownings an eye-opener to muni

THE tragedy that cut the lives of two young boys short when they recently drowned in a manmade pit filled with water, was an eye-opener to the Blouberg Municipality.
This was according to Blouberg mayor Serite Sekgoloane who was speaking at the funerals of Tokollo Sehata (11) and Thabiso Moloto (10) from Dilaeneng, Senwabarwana on Saturday.
“We are saddened by this incident. It made us realise that we must ensure that every project or contract that takes place in our area must have permission from the municipality so that we are able to monitor them.
“These holes were left by the contractors who were tarring the roads in our area, but from this week we are going to fence off the area to prevent more deaths,” Sekgoloane said.
Sekgoloane further said contractors sometimes engaged headmen about the earthworks in the area and that was when the municipality found it difficult to monitor them, as the agreement would be outside their control.
Tokollo’s uncle, Alpheus Sehata, said the municipality had honoured all the promises made to the family. “All the funeral arrangements were taken care of by them and they also erected tombstones for our loved sons. We are still saddened by the tragedy that took our children’s young lives,” said Sehata.
