Accounts bill in the red for flat never leased

POLOKWANE – A local man is very concerned that he might be blacklisted for money he says he does not owe the Polokwane Municipality.
Adam Baloyi (33) says he applied for a flat at Ga-Rena Rental Village in Ladanna, which is municipal owned, but his application was declined in July last year. On January 15, he received a municipal bill which indicated that he owed the municipality R13 137 for a flat he claims he never occupied.
“I went to the municipality and found that it was not R13 137, but almost R28 000 that I owe the municipality. I explained to the consultant that it is not possible and I was sent from one person to the next, but no one could assist me. The personnel are very rude and not helpful at all. I refuse to pay this money, because I never lived in this flat. How can I pay for water and electricity that I didn’t use?”
He adds that the municipality’s records show that there is someone living in the flat, who is also paying the municipal account. “This means the municipality expects double payment. Something is not right. My biggest fear is that I will be blacklisted, which will reflect badly on my credit. I want this problem rectified immediately,” Baloyi says.
Matshidiso Mothapo, a municipal spokesperson says the municipality will investigate the matter and provide feedback as soon as possible.
“The complainant is advised to go see one of the officials working in the revenue section, where his information will be retrieved and the matter will be dealt with,” Mothapo explains.
