TENSION erupted at the University of Venda (Univen) after a second year student died in her Riverside room before an ambulance could arrive on Monday.
The university’s director of communication and marketing, Takalani Dzaga said the female student was reported ill at around 09:40.
He said the matter was reported to the campus health office, but the paramedic on duty was unfortunately busy with another student and returned at 10:41.
“Upon arrival at the scene, the paramedic certified that she had died. After this, students barricaded the university’s main gate on Tuesday, saying they were not satisfied with the response time of the ambulance services.
Student leaders handed over a memorandum to university management. After crafting a response, management went back to meet with students at the main gate.
“Unfortunately they did not provide the registrar an opportunity to clarify matters contained in the memorandum,” said Dzaga.
“The position of university management is that all issues raised by students have been sufficiently clarified. The academic programme resumed last Wednesday.
“Management is committed to ensure each incident is thoroughly investigated to enhance provision of quality service.
“The university will add more campus paramedics and buy another ambulance.
“On behalf of the council, management, staff and students, the vice-chancellor and principal, Prof Peter Mbati extends most sincere condolences to the family of the student. The university management reiterates its commitment to a safe and secure campus.”
Another student died on Univen’s campus recently.
Three weeks ago, a female student was found dead on the pavement next to the Life Sciences building.
Her body was found by a fellow student who spotted it on the pavement and reported the matter to the university risk and security section. The matter was immediately reported to the university’s paramedics and Thohoyandou police station.
Dzaga said the paramedics certified the student dead on the scene.
“The cause of death is under investigation by the SAPS. Though the circumstances of her death are being investigated by the police, no foul play is suspected.
“Individuals who might have information about this incident can report to the university risk and security section or the police in Thohoyandou,” said Dzaga.
