Being disabled does not mean unable.

PEOPLE living with disabilities were urged not to look down on themselves or to hide as being disabled did not mean unable.

PEOPLE living with disabilities were urged not to look down on themselves or to hide as being disabled did not mean unable.

This call was made by Takalani Nemutanzhela of the regional department of economic development, environment and tourism during a Vhembe district economic summit for people living with disabilities, which was held at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre last Monday.

According to Nemutanzhela, the aim of the summit was to let people living with a disability know that they were not left on the periphery of economic development.

“Part of the summit was to expose some of the opportunities that are available in the Vhembe district to assist people living with a disability,” Nemutanzhela said.

The summit was held in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Agency Vhembe, the Road Accident Fund and the South African Social Security Agency.

The portfolio head of special programmes in the Vhembe district, Constance Mphaphuli said government recognised the activities of people living with disabilities.

“We want people living with disabilities to know that being disabled does not mean one is unable.

“We hope that people living with disabilities will get first hand information on how to access services suitable for them,” said Mphaphuli.

One of the people who attended the summit, Ntungufhadzeni Mandinda said the summit was an eye-opener.

“I will now learn how to access funds for starting a business,” said Mandinda, who is a disabled person.
