Giyani to pave way forward

THE Greater Giyani Municipality is stepping into the future by paving streets, instead using of the more common method of tarring roads.

According to the head of infrastructure at the Giyani Municipality, Million Rikhotso, the initiative is part of the municipality’s endeavour to create job opportunities by creating projects that need manual labour.

Rikhotso says the project will also save on implementation costs because paving was cheaper than tarring.

According to Rikhotso, the initiative will be labour intensive, meaning it will require many people to work on the project to lay paving on the roads.

“By so doing, we will create job opportunities for our people,” he said, adding that local residents will also be employed to do all maintenance on the paved roads once the paving was complete.

Rikhotso says the paving method has a slim chance of failure compared to tarring, which, according to him, had a high failure rate.

“On top of that, the maintenance costs will be much more affordable too,” he says.

According to Rikhotso, the municipality’s aim is to ensure all the roads in Giyani are paved in a way that would create job opportunities for young people.

“The first location to be paved in the municipal area will be section F, where a 15km stretch of road, starting from where the last tarred road stops, will be paved in the current financial year.

“This will be followed by section E in the next financial year,” says Rikhotso.
