POLOKWANE – A chemical spill brought the R37-Tzaneen bypass to a standstill on Wednesday, when a heavy goods vehicle, carrying various chemicals, collided with a light duty delivery vehicle at the Chuenespoort intersection.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, but eyewitnesses alleged that one of the vehicles skipped the traffic light, causing the heavy goods vehicle to overturn and come to rest on top of the light duty delivery vehicle.
Netcare 911 emergency personnel reported multiple injuries ranging from moderate to serious. Patients were treated on the scene and transported to hospitals in Polokwane for further medical care.
As a precaution, the fire department set up portable decontamination systems (hazmat decon pools), where cyclists and pedestrians who might have stepped in or rode through the chemicals were hosed down.
The traffic department is still investigating the cause of the incident.
