POLOKWANE – Lawyer, author, producer, director and businessman Mike Maphoto had lived in eight different countries by the age of 10 years.
Born in Zimbabwe in 1982 to exiled South African parents, he completed his A Levels (matric) at Victoria High School in England before attending the University of Cape Town (UCT) where he studied law and politics.
After graduating from UCT, he relocated to Polo-kwane to live with his father, the legendary struggle leader Ike Maphoto.
Mike is also the creator of the popular blog, Diary of a Zulu Girl, which has over 500 000 followers.
He says his success with this blog was quite accidental as he never actually considered himself an author. His blog started as a joke on a friend, but the joke was on him when it became the number one blog in the country with over 46 million page views.
The blog was converted into a novel and a television series. The second blog, Confessions of a Sugarbaby was a spin-off from the initial blog. The department of education approached Maphoto to develop it into a gr. 11 and gr. 12 set-book for life orientation, as it tells thought-provoking stories that parents or teachers may not have told children before.
Mike is also the author of Memoirs of a Tired Black Man and Missteps of a Young Wife.
