POLOKWANE – The woman attached to the office of the premier who was arrested for drunken driving as well as reckless and negligent driving over the weekend, was released on own recognisance until her next appearance, which has been set for January 5, 2015, pending the outcome of blood-alcohol level test.

Salome Mokgaphane (39), is the manager of human capital investment in the office of the premier, however, at the time of her arrest, she claimed to be premier Stanley Mathabatha’s personal assistant. This was refuted by the premier’s spokesperson, Kenny Mathivha.

Polokwane police spokesperson, Capt Ntobeng Phala said Mokgaphane was arrested during a routine patrol in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“The woman is attached to the office of the premier as a human capital investment manager and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as reckless and negligent driving,” Phala said. “She woman was uncooperative and told police that she saw nothing wrong with driving into the oncoming traffic.

She also threatened the police officials, saying she would strip them off their badges. She claimed to be the premier’s personal assistant, saying he (Stanley Mathabatha) was only a call away.

“The police had that she was heavily under the influence of alcohol, and she was subsequently arrested,” Phala said. Attempts to reach Mokgaphane for comment proved fruitless.
