Head-on collision kills 2

A three-vehicle collision on the N1 near Makhado claimed the lives of two people on Sunday.

MAKHADO – A three-vehicle collision on the N1 near Makhado claimed the lives of two people on Sunday.

According to WO Takalani Madzhigili, Makhado police spokesperson, the accident happened near the entrance of the Lalapanzi Hotel at the Wagkraal bridge. After the accident, the N1 had to be closed for several hours while rescue operations were underway.

Madzhigili told Review that a truck travelling north on the N1 collided head-on with a small bakkie. He said the truck carried large pieces of unprocessed granite rock.

“After the first impact, the bakkie was stuck under the truck and it was dragged for almost 130 metres before the truck came to a standstill. The impact also caused the truck’s load to fall off to the eastern side of the road away from the bridge,” he explained.

According to Madzhigili, the small bakkie hit a larger bakkie while it was being dragged by the truck. The larger bakkie’s front wheel broke off from the impact.

“When the truck came to a standstill after the collision, with the small bakkie still trapped under it, the driver and passenger of the small bakkie had to be cut from the wreckage by emergency workers. Unfortunately both were declared dead by paramedics on the scene,” he said.

The names of the deceased could not be published before their next of kin were informed.

Transport, safety and liaison spokesperson, Jimmy Machaka, said the department was worried about the road deaths that occurred in Limpopo over the past week. He said 16 people lost their lives in Limpopo in just one week and in all these instances, human error was to blame.
