Young artist dreams of illustrating

POLOKWANE – He started drawing when he was about five years old, and he has never stopped drawing since.

Now Tlou Calwick Moloto, a gr. 8 learner from Tom Naudé Technical High School, dreams of publishing his own comic strip.

“I love drawing and always dreamed of becoming a comic book illustrator,” he tells Review as he shows off some of his work.

Calwick makes use of felt-tip and ink pens. “I write my own script as well and develop my own characters and character profiles,” he explains.

He says he is the only one in his circle of friends who can do this and there is no one in his family who is artistic either.

Calwick’s inspiration is from cartoons and animated movies.

“The time it takes for me to finish a drawing depends on the size of the picture. A big drawing with little detail doesn’t take long, but a smaller drawing with more detail can take up to a week,” he says.

As he still goes to school, he mainly uses Saturdays to draw. Of course, his favourite subject at school is arts and crafts, but he says he also enjoys maths, life orientation and social science.

His arts and crafts teacher, Willie Cronjé says Calwick has a lot of talent. “He will make it far with his work. His talent is really exceptional.”
