POLOKWANE – The South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) is offering free health assessments to all residents in celebration of their 35th anniversary as a single arm of service attached to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
The SAMHS provides medical facilities and the training and deployment of all medical personnel within the SANDF.
The members of SAMHS celebrated their anniversary with much pomp and ceremony at the Jack Botes Hall on Tuesday.
Also present was the SANDF surgeon general, Lt Genl Aubrey Phegelelo Sedibe, who delivered the keynote address.
The free health assessments also started on Tuesday and will continue until Saturday at the Polokwane Municipality park, formerly known as the civic centre park.
The celebration also included a special medal parade, an exhibition by the SAMHS to showcase some of the unique equipment they use, and demonstrations by the Military Health Training Formation.
The SAMHS band was also on hand to make the festivities even more entertaining.
“We are here today to celebrate freedom and to honour these people who have been serving the country.
“In many cases they are not recognised for their hard work and the contributions they make,” Sedibe said.
Tribute was also paid to those members who were deployed in hospitals and sick bays, not only in South Africa but also on the African continent.
