A commitment to make city wheelchair friendly

POLOKWANE – The municipality is committed to ensuring people with disabilities can move easily around the city.
This was according to municipal spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene, in response to Review’s article last week in this regard. Wheelchair bound residents told Review that the city was not wheelchair friendly.
On investigation, Review found that several sidewalks in the city were in such a bad state of repair that wheelchairs could not access them, and in some places, municipal bins were blocking access.
Former mayor, Freddy Greaver established the Polokwane Disability Forum to assist the municipality in identifying challenges for people with disabilities in the city, but according to Johnny Graham from the Association for People with Disabilities (APD) and a member of this forum, the forum existed, but had never actually functioned.
“The Polokwane Disability Forum is one of the platforms which helps the municipality in identifying obstacles people with disabilities are encountering throughout the city. The forum will have its quarterly meeting today (Thursday). The municipality is working closely with organisations to identify obstacles,” Chuene said.
