MOKOPANE – THE DA parliamentary leader, Mmusi Maimane, was due to visit Mokopane last night (Tuesday) in an effort to assist in resolving the long-standing problems within the Mogalakwena Municipality.
DA Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle said the DA would also be meeting this week with their senior council in order to get a legal opinion on the “municipal mess” created by factions within the ruling ANC party.
While the two factions had been battling it out for leadership within the municipality since last year, service delivery had suffered in Mokopane, Smalle said. He said the ANC had abandoned the values and principles enshrined in the Constitution and had advanced political party interest to either assume power or cling to it, as well as to profit at the expense of the people.
“In November 2014 the DA suspended all political activities until the situation stabilises. The DA does not recognise the current structure as we question the legality of its formation,” he said.
ANC Limpopo spokesperson, Nocks Seabi said the provincial executive committee was satisfied with the progress made to restore the ANC leadership of the municipality, with the swearing in of 13 ward councillors. He said this was done irrespective of constant attempts to deny the party its rightful control of the Mogalakwena municipal council.
He said the ANC was confident that the remaining court actions against the nine ANC proportional representative councillors were a final attempt to gain control. “The organisation will work with its alliance structures to ensure the municipality returns to optimal performance under the guidance of the ANC.”
