POLOKWANE – The streetlights in Nirvana that were burning 24 hours a day, seven days a week were switched off late last week.
This followed after an article in Review last week, in which residents complained that the municipality asked them to use electricity wisely by switching off what they did not use, but the municipality did not practise what they preached.
Residents confirmed that the streetlights in Crescent and Orient Drive, Ganges and Himalaya Avenue, and Sri Lanka Street stayed on throughout the day and that this had been going on for three months.
On Friday Review visited the area again and this time the lights were switched off.
Malesela Maubane, a municipal spokesperson, said the municipality was committed to ensuring there was no electricity wastage.
“We remain committed to curbing electricity wastage, especially as supply remains under strain. The streetlights in Nirvana were switched on by a bypass circuit breaker which was corrected yesterday (last Tuesday),” Maubane said.
He added that all energy services issues could be reported to the municipality at (015) 290 2000/2458.
