Firefighters celebrate

International Firefighters Day was celebrated in the city on Monday.

POLOKWANE – International Firefighters Day was celebrated in the city on Monday.

The day was observed by the Fire and Rescue Limpopo team together with members of Working on Fire Limpopo, who made a colourful spectacle as they marched through the city, ending at the Polokwane Cricket Club in Suid Street.

The march was held in an effort to create awareness of the coming fire season as well as to recognise firefighters for the work they did.

Working on Fire Limpopo provincial general manager, Sam Maepa, said it was important to celebrate the day and bring honour to the men and women who had lost their lives in the line of duty.

Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng also addressed the firefighters and said the government acknowledged their dedication and would give them more resources to aid them in their difficult line of work.

She also urged people to refrain from making illegal fires and to take the necessary precautions when working with fire.
