Residents grateful to DA for clean water

RESIDENTS of Ga-Hlako and the surrounding areas of the Blouberg Municipality finally have clean drinking water after five months of fetching water a distance away.

LIMPOPO – RESIDENTS of Ga-Hlako and the surrounding areas of the Blouberg Municipality finally have clean drinking water after five months of fetching water a distance away.

Residents said they were at risk of contracting cholera after having to drink possibly contaminated water on a daily basis due to the municipality’s failure to provide water.

Residents said they thanked the DA for making noise over the matter and putting pressure on the Blouberg Municipality. “Water is now being distributed to the residents with municipal water trucks as interim relief to the community,” they said.

The DA’s Katlego Suzan Phala, a member of the provincial legislature, said even though this was a temporary solution, they would request the municipality to fill all the water tanks the municipality had installed in 2014.

She said the DA had already laid a charge with the Human Rights Commission following the shocking discovery that these residents were forced to share water with animals in the rivers and streams while others had to purchase water at an exorbitant price.

Speaking on behalf of the Capricorn District Municipality, under which the Blouberg Municipality resorts, spokesperson, Moffat Senyatsi, said the municipality was supplying water on a daily basis to specific points.

He said they moved from one area to another. “Residents should ensure they have enough containers,” Senyatsi said.
