POLOKWANE – LEARNERS from various schools in Polokwane are making wrong career choices due to the lack of career awareness campaigns.
This was according to Mpho Lebea, the Legal Aid South Africa civil administration officer. To help remedy this, the Take a Girl Child to Work campaign was held at Legal Aid South Africa’s hall in Polokwane recently.
Gr. 10 to gr. 12 learners were the main targets for this campaign, giving them an opportunity to visit a company to experience the various career opportunities available to them. “This is a national programme which helps with the career development of women in our country. We believe that by exposing girls to a profession, we are contributing to the development of their interest in becoming professionals,” Lebea said.
Amber Lawrence, a gr. 12 learner, said she gained a lot of knowledge from Legal Aid South Africa. “It has always been my dream to become a lawyer. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to meet with people from Legal Aid South Africa. I’ve learned that Legal Aid South Africa is a non-profit organisation that aims to help people to resolve their issues, mostly those who are unable to afford private lawyers,” Lawrence said.
Khota Molewa, a gr. 11 learner, said she learned a lot from Legal Aid South Africa, it inspired her to study towards becoming a lawyer. “It is a great privilege to attend the campaign, it is an opportunity to learn more about careers relating to law and I’m grateful to Legal Aid South Africa and our school for giving us this opportunity.”
