LIMPOPO – GREENSIDE Primary School gr. 6 and gr. 7 learners came together to engage in a dialogue that supported the fight against drugs and crime in communities and bullying in schools. The dialogue was held at the school on Thursday.
The event was organised by loveLife and hosted by the Westenburg police, department of social development, Tlhokomelo Home-based Care and Buite Clinic.
According to Westenburg sector 2 secretary, Flora Nkuna, communities in Polokwane experienced a high rate of crime.
“We have realised that many of our learners are engaging themselves in gangsterism, causing them to drop out of school at an early age.
“We saw it as an important activity to visit our surrounding schools and teach the learners how such criminal activities can ruin their life goals. We cannot allow such matters to put our children in danger. We urge the communities to work together with the community policing forum (CPF) to fight crime in our communities,” Nkuna said.
Salome Rathete, Tlhokomelo Home-based Care manager, said the learners should first respect each other and fight bullying at school, working together as a team.
“Bullying is one of the major problems in our schools, driving our children into the streets to become drug slaves. Today’s life is very different when compared to yesterday’s life.
“Our children should ensure every minute of their lives are well use and we, as parents, must also ensure our children are focused on their education,” said Rathete.
Sammy Mailula, the Love Life ground breaker, said this was a way of teaching the learners about how criminal activities can ruin their life goals if they engage themselves in gangsterism.
“Our plan is to visit all the provincial schools where we will be helping the learners to deal with matters such as bullying at schools. We also urge the community to work with us in fighting crime in our communities and to report such activities to the nearest police stations,” Mailula said.
