POLOKWANE – Good Hope Primary School encourages a culture of reading at the school and motivates learners to read as many books as they can.
The principal, Cindy Buys, said reading was very important because it helped learners with their vocabulary and word selection. “It also helps learners identify different words and their meaning. Beside the books that they read at school, the learners also go to the Westenburg Library to read,” she explained.
Review asked some of the gr. 4 learners if they liked to read and what their favourite story books were.

Kgodiso Malatji said he loved reading and his mother taught him how to read.
“My mom is the best, she reads me a story every night before I go to sleep. I like books that have pictures in. The pictures make the story interesting and that is why I love reading books with pictures. I go to the library every Thursday and Friday after school to read. I have read a lot of books, but my favourite is Three Little Pigs, especially the part where the wolf blows their homes away.”

Jacquoline Pelusa said she went to the library everyday after school to read books while she waited for her transport.
“Reading is good for me, because I learn new words,” she said.

Takalani Mauvhelovana said she liked reading as it made her intelligent.
“Reading teaches me new words and when I don’t know what the words mean, my mommy helps me. My favourite story is Little Red Riding Hood. I like her red jacket, and I asked my mother to also buy me one for winter,” Takalani said.

Moloko Sefolo said she enjoyed going to the library to read, because there were a lot of books there.
“Some of the books have small writing and others have big writing. I like the books with the big writing and pictures. I spend one hour at the library everyday,” Moloko said.

According to Nakedi Ramothwala, reading is very good for him as he had learnt many things.
“Story books not only teach me how to read and new words, but there are also a lot of adventures in the different stories. My favourite books are Three Little Pigs and Pinocchio,” Nakedi said.
