POLOKWANE – Gender Links held a four-day workshop comprised of people in the media industry from last Sunday to last Thursday.
Gender Links is a physical and virtual resource centre that facilitates the collection, connection and dissemination of information resources relating to gender, media and diversity.
The conversation at the workshop centred on gender equality, gender-based violence and the role it has in furthering the struggle for equality in society and the workplace.
The workshop focused on issues such as media freedom, freedom of expression and the essence of popular culture. Talks were given on how to reduce the communication gap between women and men and contribute to the fight for gender equality.
Gender Links provides advisory services to regional and international organisations, as well as government departments, on gender mainstreaming. Madikana Matjila of Gender Links said women in the media industry should be empowered.
Another aim of the workshop was to create partnerships and networking opportunities by bringing various media groups together. “Woman should be given shows such as current affairs to present and they should lead roles that were previously meant for men,” he said.
