Cook-off to treat culinary taste buds

POLOKWANE – Food is a powerful force and it brings all cultures together during meal time. Absa bank hosted an evening of culinary delight shared with Chef Mario, former Kaizer Chiefs soccer player Thabo Mooki, representatives from various media houses and local government.
As Marcel Boulestin once said: “Cookery is not chemistry. It is an art. It requires instinct and taste rather than exact measurements.”
This was proved when amateurs and experienced cooks joined in an exciting cooking experience. There were different teams consisting of four members each, they were given ingredients and had to choose a team leader who gave them instructions.
The members took turns in preparing the dishes following the recipe, given a certain amount of time to prepare. Adjudicators tasted the food after the teams finished preparing. Each group had to present their dish and give it a name. Absa regional manager, marketing and corporate relations, Mosidi Mokgele, said that the aim of the event was a way of strengthening their relationship with the media in the province, local government and other stakeholders such as the KPMG office.
“We used the opportunity to showcase our Hans van Rensburg branch which was closed temporarily while it was undergoing refurbishments late in 2014. Some of our stakeholders thought the branch had closed, when in fact it was just a temporary measure to help with upgrades at the branch.
“That is also the reason why the cook-off event was held inside the bank itself,” she said. The winning team went home with a snappy chef stove and all the other attendees received a cook book.
