LIMPOPO – MORE villagers in Polokwane have become happy recipients of electrification projects as the municipality’s programme led by the mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng intensified on July 1, when the mayor embarked on a visit to three villages in the Molepo, Nobody and Makotopong areas to officially hand-over multimillion rand electrification projects to these communities.
The programme started at Mountain View village just behind Boyne, where 90 families will receive electricity.
The headman, Mr Molepo, said they welcomed the development that government brought to the Mountain View community. This community will benefit from a R2 million project which will give electricity to 90 households.
The second stop was at Letlhakwe village in the Nobody Mothiba area, where 693 households will be electrified at R7 million.
Headman, Tomas Mothiba of Letlhakwe said the community would be relieved from the difficulties of living without electricity for a long time. He further urged the community to ensure smooth running of the project.
The final stop for the day was at a village called Mamabolo at Ga-Mothiba. Here, 487 families will for the first time have access to electricity, with the project cost at R6,5 million.
Makotopong authority representative Vela “VV” Phaleng said the local authority was particularly pleased that this development brought with it jobs for the community.
The three projects will create temporary job creation to about 140 families.
The mayor said as in line with government programmes, the municipality ensured services were also diverted to rural areas because rural electrification was not within the licence area of the municipality. She said the municipality appreciated the patience of these communities since the municipality consulted with them over their challenges.
“The communities have to work together with the contractors and consultants to ensure these projects are completed before their completion date because this year’s festive season should be celebrated differently and in a much better way for the communities.”
For the past month, Nkadimeng has distributed well over R50 million in electrification projects to communities in Mankweng unit G, Hlatlaganya, Thoka/Sephaphose, Matshelapata, Titibe, Dairing, Chokwe, Newlands, Thaba, Manthoroane, Mankgaile and Mabitsela. Ten high mast lights were also being installed in the Mankweng, Sebayeng and Leshikiki areas to assist in the fight against crime.
