LIMPOPO – RESIDENTS of the Thulamela Municipality were overjoyed when new modern street lights were switched on in Thohoyandou for the first time.
The street lights, which cost the municipality R4,1 million to install, were installed along the road from JJ Motors to the Khoroni Hotel and would help to reduce crime, enabling the police to patroll the area more effectively.
Accompanied by councillors and residents, the Thulamela mayor, Grace Mahosi officially lit the new street lights on Thursday.
“We were without street lights in Thohoyandou and as a municipality, we were worried that communities will be victims of crime.
“We have a vision to make the Thohoyandou a city by 2030. If the municipality is better developed, it will help to attract investors,” said Mahosi.
According to Mahosi, the erection of the modern street lights was another symbol of the Thulamela Municipality’s commitment to fight crime and to improve the Thulamela Municipality.
“We were able to create temporary jobs in local communities during the streetl ights project.
“We also helped to develop a skills set in young people during the project and they will soon be able to use these new skills when we erect street lights in villages like Makonde, Khubvi, Muledane and Mukula,” added Mahosi.
