LIMPOPO – “RADIO is one of the things I don’t see myself without,” says Tinyiko Sylvester Makhubele (21), who is known as DJ Lagugga by the University of Venda (Univen) community radio station listeners.
Makhubele was born in Mashamba in the Vhembe region and is currently a second-year student at Univen, studying towards a degree in media and communication.
He is a presenter and producer of Univen radio’s community drive from 15:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday, and he also hosts the weekend drive between 15:00 and 17:00 on Saturday. “I joined radio at the age of 19 years and I was, and still am, one of the youngest presenters. I consider myself one of the number one radio deejays around and love radio,” he says.
“My inspiration comes from many quarters including Complexion, Tbotouch DJ Brain, Jones and Mpho Nefale from Phalaphala FM.
“My biggest inspiration is my mother, Joyce, who raised me on her own. She usually tells me not to forget where I come from because I will easily remember where I am headed,” he continues.
He says he hopes to be heard both nationally and internationally one day. “I am learning so much about radio, and have only been at Univen for two years now.” He admits that it sometimes gets tricky to balance his studies and radio work.
“I love fashion as well, and I also want to be a fashion designer one day. One of my biggest dreams is to win a South African Music Award. There are so many talented people all over the country, and I would like to start an organisation that can help them to use their talents towards having a better life.”
He encourages young people to get as much education as they can. “Be the best at what you do. Work as hard as you can. Don’t let your upbringing control you or your future,” he concludes.
