Adopt a school and make a difference for education

POLOKWANE – More than 10 schools in the Polokwane circuit marched through the city to raise funds in the name of education on Saturday.

The march started at Noorderland High School. The members of the representative council for learners initiated the Adopt-a-School Foundation, where they pleaded with various individuals, companies and businesses to fund underprivileged schools with infrastructure, furniture and educational facilities.

“We would like to have a variety of interventions which will have a tremendous impact on disadvantaged schools. We need all the assistance we can possibly get,” says Isaiah Ramakgolo, spokesperson for the Student Representative Council. Nthara Tladi, the deputy manager, governance at the department of education, said The Adopt-a-School Foundation not only makes an impact on the lives and development of the learners in adopted schools, but also on the quality of education and the sustainability of the school for future generations.

“We aim to spend enough time in an adopted school and to foster a caring relationship between the sponsor, the school and the community to create a sustainable and meaningful impact on the schools and communities in which we work,” she said.

Ramakgolo said that the march was also aimed to unite schools and help them to work together. “We are all affected when a school in our circuit lacks infrastructure or educational facilities, in most cases it makes the learners’ performance drop which is not good,” he adds. The undisclosed amount of money raised during the march will go to the underprivileged schools.
