POLOKWANE – Residents were treated to the beautiful voices and captivating stage presence of the Drakensberg Boys Choir at the Mitchell House theatre last Monday night.
The world-renown choir consists of boys from all walks of life, from Gr 4 to Gr 10 (ages 10 to 15 years). They pride themselves on a repertoire reflecting the multi-faceted cultures of our rainbow nation. And they did not disappoint as the boys performed a mix of modern, classic and African music to continue to set the unconventional pace for boy choirs they have become known for.
The singing boys are on a national tour around South Africa and it was their first time performing in Polokwane. To show Polokwane’s friendliness and hospitality the boys stayed with some parents of Mitchell House for the duration of their visit.
The evening began with a performance by the Mitchell House Choir to get everyone in the right mood before the boys took to the stage.
Led by Charlotte Botha and accompanied by Lubabalo Dyasi with his impressive piano skills, the boys started off with a beautiful hymn. The first half of the show saw more contemporary pieces with some of the boys showcasing their voices through solo’s to great delight of the young girls in the audience who met these songs with loud applause and jeers.
The boys closed off the first half of the show with Circle of Life, a song from the popular animation movie Lion King, accompanied by Djembe drums.
The second half saw the choir more active as they came out dressed in African attire and gumboots. The boys boasted their impressive skills with gumboot dancing and drumming where had the crowd on their feet.
The choir’s visit to Polokwane ended on Wednesday before they departed on another leg of their national tour.
