Empowering young girls through campaign
The Take a Girl Child to Work campaign and other career exhibitions are crucial tools which can help sharpen the minds and expand the knowledge of learners
LIMPOPO – Female Gr 11 and 12 learners from Maroba High School, Kekana High School and Matladi Project High School joined the campaign and were hosted by Eskom Limpopo.
Eskom Limpopo spokesperson, Dikgabane Rampedi, said it was important for them to host the Take a Girl Child to Work campaign as the learners who attended the campaign were their main target for future employees.
Rampedi said through the campaign, they wanted to contribute to the empowerment of young female learners as they saw them as future leaders of South Africa.
“Eskom focuses mainly on deep rural villages because we realised that learners within the rural villages do not have access to information about varsities, career choices, or skill shortages in the country,” said Rampedi.
He said Eskom has several bursaries available for female learners, and through these bursaries, they wanted to help learners who produced good results, but were unable to further their studies due to financial difficulties.
Kabelo Kekana (18), a Gr 12 learner from Kekana High School, said Eskom has nourished her mind with the campaign and all that was left for her to do was to ensure she passed matric with good grades.
“I want to study radiography or electrical engineering at the University of Pretoria after completing my matric. It will be a dream come true for me if I can start working towards my studies today,” Kekana said excitedly.
