R75m Sun Meropa Hotel to be completed in 2017
This project is the start of a new adventure - Raleigh Maesela, Chairperson of the Meropa Board.
POLOKWANE – Sun International and Domba Empowerment Corporation (PTY) Ltd announced its expansion plans for Sun Meropa at a sod turning ceremony for a new hotel at the casino complex on Tuesday. The hotel will join the Town Lodge on the premises and the R75 million development is scheduled for completion in August 2017. The event was attended by Sun International staff, Meropa staff, representatives from the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, the Chairperson of the Limpopo Gambling Board as well as the Chairperson of the Domba Empowerment Corporation.
Chairperson of the Meropa Board, Raleigh Maesela, said this project is the start of a new adventure.
The development of the hotel forms part of Meropa’s commitment to the City of Polokwane and the Limpopo Gambling Board and in the last financial year, Sun Meropa directly contributed over R85 000 in Socio-Economic Development (SED) projects mainly in education, sports and culture initiatives.
“It reaffirms Sun Meropa’s commitment to supporting the city’s economic priorities, and making Polokwane the destination of choice for international and domestic travelers,” Measela said.
The development will also provide economic stimulus for the region, both during the construction period and after, through job creation and tourism to the area with about 500 new on- and off-site jobs during the construction phase, with the majority of the labour to be sourced from the local community.
In keeping with the complex’s exquisite Moroccan architecture, the three-star hotel will follow the theme and will boast 60 rooms with 54 standard rooms, four junior suites and two superior suites. Operations Director, Thabo Mosololi, says the hotel will be small to ensure they do not monopolise the accommodation industry in the city. “We hope to add more members to the 400 staff employed at Meropa,” Mosololi said.
