DJ-ing brothers follow in mother’s footsteps
Nici Vogel's hobby as a DJ stretched to 22 years and she passed this talent on to her two sons.
POLOKWANE – The 52-year-old mother stated that she has always had a deep love for all types of music and wherever she went to DJ, her two sons tagged along.
“I did it as a part-time hobby to earn extra money and I enjoyed it very much, but after 22 years it became a job for me, and when something like that becomes a job, it is best to stop,” said Vogel.

Even though Nici stopped playing at events it was very clear that her talents as a DJ run deep in her sons as they took over the mantle from their mother.
“They also do it as a part-time hobby, they are not professional DJ’s but they also enjoy playing at events when they have the time,” said Nici.
The older son Wikus currently DJ’s part-time at events in and around Polokwane and Limpopo, while the younger son, Ewoudt plays at clubs in Nelspruit.
“I still go to the clubs and listen to Ewoudt’s music, I don’t mind today’s music as I enjoy it too” she added.
“I learned a lot from my mother, even as a young boy I would lie under her table and listen to her music, I am really thankful for all the things I have learnt from her,” her son Wikus said.
“I also learned a lot from my mother, everything from reading a crowd to playing the right music. She had a big influence on me for which I am grateful,” Ewoudt added.
Even though Nici no longer DJ’s, she stated that she enjoyed playing at events because she met a lot of new people.
“I also used it as a stress-reliever, when I played I would feel as if I had energy again for the rest of the week,” she said.
Nici added that even though she enjoyed it a lot, it also had its challenges.
“You have to learn to read a crowd and get everyone on the dance floor, which can be easy if you are playing for a specific age group, for example 21 year olds, but as soon as you play at a wedding, the age group can differ widely making it difficult at times,” she said.
She has advice for new and upcoming DJ’s who want to do it for a living.
“You must have a huge passion for music, make sure to save up for proper equipment and have a wide taste in music as it will help you to play at different events,” Nici explained.
