The Department of Education recognised the diligence and dedication of educators in its service during the 17th Annual National Teaching Awards in Polokwane last Thursday evening. Awards were made in several categories such as Excellence in Grade R Teaching, Excellence in Secondary School Leadership, Excellence in Special Needs and Inclusive Teaching and Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching. Addressing the audience at the awards ceremony held at Bolivia Lodge, Education MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe said the recognition of excellence in teaching inspires the whole sector to be its best for the learners.
He described educators as a valuable asset in the education system who contribute to the future strength of the nation by providing the highest quality education to young people.
“They are the pride and joy of nations and being a teacher is one of the greatest jobs in the world. We are celebrating the joy of hard work and the pride of being a dedicated teacher. Their contribution to making nations successful remains immense and immeasurable,” Kgetjepe said.
The presentation of the awards was overseen by acting Head of Department Beauty Mutheiwana assited by Kgetjepe and senior management members of the department. Noticeable winners on the night were Mohlatlego Kgare from Letheba High School in the Botlokwa area who was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Mapula Mofya-Legodi from Rev. MP Malatjie Primary School in Seshego Zone 8 for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching. Kgare has been teaching since 1983 and is one of the longest serving educators at the school. Mapula Mofya-Legodi holds a PhD in Education from University of South Africa and been teaching at the school since 1994.
