Transport department’s solution to catching speeding/negligent motorists
In an effort to clamp down on moving violations on the N1, the Department of Transport and Community Safety MEC, Nandi Ndalane officially launched new high-tech vehicles and also issued a stern warning to motorists.
POLOKWANE – She says the Department of Transport cannot deploy Traffic Police at every kilometre on the N1 for speed and traffic violations, and motorists are taking advantage of this unfortunate reality.
“In this regard, the Department have moved with speed in procuring vehicles with the help of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), which will be fitted with high-tech technology which will enable traffic officers to catch motorists for moving violations including, but not limited to, excessive speeding, unsafe overtaking and reckless and negligent driving among others,” Ndalane explains.
She further says the unmarked vehicles will patrol the entire stretch of N1 in the province. Ndalane warns that the Department will adopt a zero-tolerance attitude for traffic offenders on N1, adding: “We cannot fold our arms when innocent lives are taken on our roads due to irresponsible motorists, harsh actions will be taken against those found to be violating rules of the road.”
The Department will be launching the festive season campaign in partnership with the Department of Health and Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism on a date to be announced as soon as the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters launches the National campaign on 25 November.
