The keys to successful leadership

Dr Kgatle says humility is one of the most important components that make a good leader

LIMPOPO – Dr Solly Kgatle, an academic, author, pastor and life coach, recently launched his highly anticipated book Servant Leadership, the path to success which dissects the two styles of leadership, the decision-making model and path-goal model.

He explains that his book seeks to provide solutions for leadership problems, especially in an African context.

One of the five leadership misconceptions he talks about is kinship, where he defines kinship as blood relationships.

“It is gradually becoming the order of the world whereby people are occupying leadership positions that they are not qualified for because of kinship.

“The relationship should not be used to grant positions to some, because it deprives others of the same positions.” He gives an illustration in the bible of James and John who thought that they could easily ascend to higher levels because they were very close to Jesus.

“Leadership is not measured by the level of education but by the level of relationship with the followers,” Kgatla says.

“A leader must be able to relate with a cleaner as much as they can relate with top management,” he emphasises.

“In African culture a person cannot claim to be humble until there is an act of humility. If a person observes the rules and regulations of that culture, they are seen as humble,” he says.

Kgatla mentions that the world seeks servant leaders with humility who are team builders and selfless just as Jesus was.

The book is self-published. To order a copy, contact Dr Kgatle at 073 084 7824, via Facebook: solly kgatle or send an email to kgatles@yahoo.com.
