Bogus SARS employees nabbed
Two suspects arrested for defrauding unsuspecting victims of thousands of rand will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court tomorrow (Monday).
POLOKWANE – The suspects, pretending to be SARS employees, were arrested on Friday in the CBD after defrauded victims of cash money of between R2 500 and R3 000, according to Police Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
“The suspects, a Zimbabwean and South African, were pretending to be SARS employees, soliciting CV’s from job seekers and thereafter telling them that they have been successful. They would then demand money from the victims, telling them it’s for uniform and employee ID card,” explained Mojapelo.
He added that on face value, the cards which have photos and IDs of potential employees, appear authentic as they bear SARS emblem or logo. The uniform, T-shirt also has similar emblem.
During the arrest police managed to confiscate fraudulent cards and uniform, said Mojapelo.
“Preliminary investigations confirm the two are not employed by SARS… the South African suspect was an intern at SARS in 2012.”
The suspects will both appear on a charge of fraud.
