Thieves loot student rooms

Several students who rent accommodation in Seshego township returned after the festive season only to find their rooms had been broken into.

POLOKWANE – As they tell CV of the broken doors and windows that greeted them upon arrival, they add that criminals know very well the rooms are not guarded over the academic recess.

Housebreaking remains a major concern in Seshego – criminals are mainly after plasma television screens, state-of-the-art music centres, computers, cell phones, designer clothes and movable appliances.

The student accommodation is situated in Zone 2’s Third House section. Burglars forced their entry into the four-roomed house by bending open the burglar bars. They then ransacked the rooms.

It seemed the burglars left in a hurry as some of their loot was found near the exits of the house.

The owner of the house, who does not stay at the house, said he hoped the tenants had taken their most valuable belongings home over the holiday.

The man, who opted to remain anonymous, said by the look of things, the thieves were afer money, “that’s why they left tattered clothes and academic material scattered all over here”.

About seven houses from the scene of the housebreaking, thieves stole a water meter reader.

Apparently, the burglars entered the yard and blocked the water flow from the meter before cutting it off.

Manufactured from copper, meters are some of the much-sought commodities to be sold at cash for scrap establishments.

Within the neighbourhood of Third House, there has been a wave of housebreakings.

Elsewhere in the crime-ridden Zone 6, burglars allegedly used a spade to open a wooden door but only found beds.

Asked about whether these crimes were reported and are now under investigation, Spokesperson for the Seshego Police, WO Mothemane Malefo, said he suspected there weren’t many housebreakings over December as there was a “heavy police presence and visibility in the area”.
